Accreditation is a third-party attestation related to a conformity assessment body conveying formal demonstration of its competence to carry out the tasks of conformity assessment. Accreditation evaluates Conformity Assessment bodies independently, against relevant recognized standards.
The Sri Lanka Accreditation Board (SLAB) is the national accreditation authority for Sri Lanka established under Act No. 32 of 2005. The Board functions as an autonomous body under the purview of the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Co-operative Development. SLAB is recognized by the government to assess organizations against International and National standards that provide Testing, Medical/Clinical Testing, Calibration, Inspection, Certification, GHG Validation/Verification, Proficiency Testing, and Good Laboratory Practice.
SLAB is not a regulator. It does not have any legal or regulatory enforcement powers. SLAB carries out its activities voluntarily but does, however, have oversight functions and works to ensure that those organizations it accredits meet the applicable international accreditation standards.
Having SLAB accreditation does not in any way change the contractual responsibilities among an accredited Conformity Assessment Body (CAB) and its client. While the holding of SLAB accreditation is an indication of the integrity and competence of a CAB, it does not constitute an undertaking by SLAB that the CAB will maintain a performance.
SLAB accredited testing, calibration, inspection, and certification reduces the need for suppliers to be assessed by each of their customers. SLAB involvement in international groups, such as APAC, IAF, and ILAC, provides for mutual recognition, which reduces the need for multiple assessments and helps to eliminate barriers to trade.
Accreditation is the formal recognition by an accreditation authority of the technical and organizational competence of a conformity assessment body to carry out a specific service in accordance with standards. Certification is the procedure by which a third party gives written assurance that a product, process, system, or person conforms to specified requirements.
SLAB offers accreditation in the areas of Testing, Medical & Calibration Laboratories, Management system certification (QMS, EMS, FSMS, EnMS, OHSMS), Product Certification, Inspection Bodies, GHG Validation/Verification Bodies, Bodies certifying personnel, Proficiency Testing Providers, and Good Laboratory Practice.
It depends on the efficiency of both parties (SLAB and the CAB). If SLAB has all necessary resources and the CAB has a well-implemented system, as per the minimum time frame given by the SLAB, it will take 06 months. Some CABs may do it faster.
It will depend on the applied number of schemes, the number of fields, and the number of tests. SLAB has developed Fee Structures for each scheme which can be downloaded from the Publications section.
